How to Boost Your Visual Branding in 2017

I’ve fallen in love with the idea of visual branding. It all started back in the beginning of 2015 when my web designer and I teamed up to rebrand my website. What we created together was so amazing and invoked such a positive response from people that I started becoming curious as to how visual branding plays a role online.
Here are just some of the reactions I’ve gotten as a result of paying more attention to what my brand represents visually:
  • I had a coaching client tell me that my website screams “Give me your money.”
  • A very popular finance blogger said my website is one of the best designed he’s ever seen.
  • I’ve been told my website helps people understand that finance can be both practical and beautiful. (Considering this is exactly what I was going for, this means a lot.)
  • I won the industry award for Best Designed Personal Finance Blog of 2016.
  • I was awarded the Best Finance Blog of 2016 by South Florida Bloggers. One of the major criteria was design.

So what is this visual branding thing?

Visual branding is exactly what it sounds like. It’s what your brand or company looks like. I would even go as far as to say it’s what it how people feel when they see your brand online. It’s a fascinating concept and one worth looking into this year.
Here are some of the ways you can boost your visual branding in 2016 and therefore also grow your business.

Work with a good designer.

Let’s face it, not all of us are good designers. We also just don’t have the time to design our own stuff. That’s why if you want to boost your visual branding, you’re going to have to partner up with someone who knows what they are doing.
That’s why if you want to boost your visual branding, you’re going to have to partner up with someone who knows what they are doing.
In my case, my main designer is both extremely talented and she’s been a fan of my work for years. She gets exactly what I’m trying to do, and it shows in the beautiful stuff we create together.

Focus on stuff like Instagram and Pinterest.

Depending on your business, you might want to start focusing on your visual branding on Instagram and Pinterest. Here are the reasons why I love both of these:
  • Pinterest has increased my blog traffic significantly and it’s all run on autopilot. My most popular pin has been shared over 6,000 times and points to my highest converting blog post for affiliate sales.
  • Instagram got me a couple of writing clients.
  • I get a decent amount of traffic from Instagram too.
I also see how other bloggers have made significant strides in their businesses by incorporating these two And now that Instagram has Stories and Live Video it’s basically a one-stop-shop for all things visual branding.

Final Thoughts

While I’m more of a words and marketing copy type of person, I do have a major appreciation for good visual branding. I also see how it’s completely changed my business and it can change yours too. Make 2017 your year of visual branding.

3 Little Ways to Use Social Media to Market Yourself

One of the most common questions I get asked is how business owners can use social media to market themselves.
There seems to be a lot of overwhelm out there in terms of how to use social media to market yourself. With new tools available all the time, and then older tools acquiring new features (I’m looking at you Instagram!), it’s enough to make anyone’s head spin.
The good news is you can use social media in small ways to market yourself. At the end of the day, it’s a whole lot of little actions that add up over time anyway. Keep that in mind as you implement social media in some small ways.

Show behind the scenes.

Do you want to know what audiences on social media love? Behind the scenes content. I’m serious. They eat it up!
I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that the reason behind the scenes content is so popular is because we have this craving for public figures and businesses to pull back the curtain and show us their real lives. In a constantly connected world, we’re ironically craving real connection.
One of the ways you can do this is by using the Instagram Stories feature (or Snapchat if you’re still into it). For example, I’ll do small videos where I explain marketing concepts as I’m working on them. It gives some behind the scenes of my business as well as provides value for social media followers.
It doesn’t take a whole lot to do this either. The videos are literally 10 seconds. It’s simply a matter of remembering to do it.

Livestream while you’re working.

A few days ago I was interviewing the founder of a local meetup group for freelancers for my podcast. I posted about it on Instagram and instantly received requests to livestream the interview. Since the people asked for it, we gave it to them.
It ended up being an excellent idea. Not only did I show viewers how I set up for a podcast interview (that’s the behind the scenes stuff I was talking about), we also took live questions from the audience while I was recording.
It was a hit! And all we had to do was fire up Instagram and start a live video of us filming something we were already doing anyway!
So rather than trying to invent new content all the time, you can use social media to show people what you’re already doing.

Share wins.

Another small way you can use social media is to share wins with your audience as they happen.
Did you get featured in the press? Snap a picture of the article and post it on social.
Did you hit a new milestone? Post about it on Facebook.
Did a client text you an amazing testimonial? Ask them for permission to use it, take a screen shot and put it on Instagram.

The Bottom Line

It’s not difficult to use social media to market yourself if you remember that it’s all about small actions that add up over time. By taking it one step at a time and using social media in some of the ways mentioned in this post, you can cut out the overwhelm.

4 Ways to Use New Instagram Features In Your Marketing

Since paying more attention to my visual branding, I’ve come to really love Instagram. Actually, that’s an understatement. I’m pretty much obsessed with Instagram.
If you’ve been on the image-heavy social media platform lately, then you may have noticed some new Instagram features like live video streaming and short stories a la Snapchat. You now also have the option to make your profile a business page.
I’ve been experimenting with these new Instagram features and have found a few ways to use them in your marketing plan. Here are just some of the ways I’ve been taking advantage of all the new stuff on IG.

Show behind the scenes using IG Stories.

I was recently traveling for a client that hired me to create, teach and film a few business classes for them. Since I was traveling and working with some awesome people, I figured it would be a good idea to show my Instagram followers some of the behind the scenes of what it’s like to be a professional blogger and social media influencer.
I used new Instagram features like Stories and Boomerang (technically not new but they added it to the IG app) to show things like camera setups, sets, a tour of my hotel room and the goofy stuff we did on breaks.

Teach something using IG live video.

During our lunch break, I decided to use one of the new Instagram features to teach my audience something. More specifically, I used the live video feature to show them live footage of what was going on and introduce my followers to some of the people I was working with.
For example, I was working with a local mastermind facilitator and yoga teacher who was interviewing me for my client. I got her on live video to talk about what we were doing and she even gave my followers some yogic hand stretches for the office.

Market your products and services.

Another thing I use the new Instagram features for is to market my products and services. For example, I created a few stories right before going on air for a radio show. This showed them the behind the scenes I already mentioned, plus I was able to share a tip about how bloggers and business owners can get free PR.
From there, I directed them to an on-demand class I sell that teaches them how to get free PR for their businesses. I simply put the link to the sales page in my bio and let them know the class was available for them to purchase.
Granted, it’s important to note that I’m always sharing valuable content. I don’t only use the new Instagram features to try to make sales. That’s simply one piece of the overall marketing pie.

Show them you’re human.

I’ll use Boomerang to make goofy videos and post them to my Stories. I’m somewhat goofy by nature and it shows my followers a side of me that’s different from my normal “business-y” stuff.
People relate to people, so make sure you’re using the new Instagram features to show people that you’re real.

Final Thoughts

When used in the aforementioned ways, the new Instagram features can certainly be a real game changer for your marketing plan. There’s no longer a need to go on different apps for different features which makes things a whole lot easier.

3 Keys to Creating a Unique Value Proposition In Your Branding

I’ve been thinking a lot about branding recently. Particularly as it pertains to how to communicate your message via visuals and text. Truth be told, I’ve been putting the pieces together to figure out my unique value proposition in my branding.
Now, when someone hears unique value proposition it usually refers to a selling point or the problem your product or service solves for your customer. In this case, I’m going to use the term unique value proposition in how you can differentiate yourself from others in your branding.

Why do you need a unique value proposition?

In my experience, once I found what made me unique and how to incorporate that into my branding, then the other pieces of the puzzle started making sense.
Additionally, even if you’re running a business in which you are not the main figure in terms of marketing, you may have noticed that people are into lifestyles these days.
For example, I may be a finance writer, but the reason people even listen to me is because I’m “selling” a lifestyle. A lifestyle of freedom based on getting your finances in order and starting a business as a result. Therefore, my life is my unique value proposition, like when I show people on Instagram how awesome it is to not have a boss because I get to travel.
With that being said, I’m not the only finance blogger selling a lifestyle. So the question becomes how you can create your own unique value proposition within your niche.

How to Find The Unique Value Proposition In your Branding

There are a few ways to figure out your unique value proposition in your branding. Here are a few of things I’ve discovered as I work on my own.
  • Focus on your superpowers. I focus a lot of my effort on telling stories because it’s one of my superpowers. I’m really good on-the-fly and on live video. I’m also really good on podcasts because of my ability for storytelling. Not everyone has the same superpowers, so make sure to focus on yours.
  • Focus on the different things that make you unique. People connect to people. That’s why your unique value proposition in your branding may be as easy as being yourself. For example, I’m kind of a nerd who digs stuff like tarot and Greek mythology. I embrace this and recently doing stuff like weekly money tarot readings on my Instagram.
  • Find what’s lacking in the market based on what your interests. When I was a little kid I wanted to be an artist. At some point, I traded in paint for words and became a writer. That being said, I still have a major appreciation for art, so I use it in my branding. For example, my website design is based on the murals in my town’s art district. My Instagram feed is getting more artsy as well because it’s a part of who I am. The reason this works for branding is because money is usually scary for people, so my mission has become to make finance as beautiful as possible. This is something that no one in the industry is really doing (at least not to my knowledge) so it’s become my unique value proposition.
As you can see, finding your unique value proposition in your branding doesn’t need to be that complicated. Often times it’s going to come back to what makes you unique and then learning how to express that.

How the 80/20 Rule Helped Me Double My Income in Two Months

When I first read about the 80/20 rule, or the Pareto Principle, I had a healthy skepticism for it. I couldn’t wrap my head around how 80% of my work would only lead to 20% of results and that the remaining 20% of my efforts would lead to 80% of my profits. Over time, however, I started to see some patterns that would prove the 80/20 rule to be completely true. Once I took steps to implement what I learned from it, I doubled my income in about two months! Read on to learn how it happened and how you can apply the 80/20 rule to your business.

Does the 80/20 Rule Apply to Your Business?

When I still had my old day job, I took some time to assess my projects and found that the 80/20 rule held true to some extend. There were some projects I was incredibly efficient at completing and always impressed my boss. Others took up a ton of time and led to huge frustration for little reward. By focusing on the projects that led to the best results, I was able to improve my efficiency and landed a promotion with a fat raise.
But with a boss who dictated my to do list, I had limited ability to implement 80/20. When I left my day job and went full-time in April, 2016, I hustled and took every dollar I could get. But that strategy left me feeling burned out and tired while struggling for the profitability I wanted. It was around then that I realized it was time to look at my business with an 80/20 lens.

The 80/20 Rule Was Nearly Spot on For My Business

From June through September, I earned $5,000-$8,000 per month in revenue. Good income, but not great. And living in expensive Southern California and paying for expensive rent and insurance on my own, a $60,000 annual revenue rate would leave us struggling to get by. I was working long hours but no matter how hard I hustled, my income wasn’t making any big jumps.
I started talking through my revenue, business strategy, and where I was spending my time with my wife and members of my mastermind when I realized that my website development business was earning far less with more hours than the writing side of my business. That’s when the 80/20 came back to mind.
I quickly glanced at my accounting reports and saw that I was earning a little over 85% of my income from writing but was spending about 75% of my time on website work, which was bringing in around 10%-15% of my revenue. Holy 80/20 Batman!

Implementing 80/20

After talking it through with my mastermind, I decided it was time to shut down my website support business in favor of focusing on writing. I slowly started turning away hourly work, then bigger website projects, then monthly recurring clients. I still have a few long-term clients in my web business, but for practical purposes it is shut down.
At its peak, I was earning around $2,000 per month from website support and development. Not chump change, but also not enough to bring in the big income I wanted and support my family in SoCal. Shutting down freed up so much time that I was able to focus on bringing on new writing clients and could stop wasting time on sometimes frustrating website projects.

Watching My Income Skyrocket

At the same time I shut down my website business, I was bringing on new clients that I met at the FinCon conference. All of the free time helped me destress and focus on those new clients, and the results started to appear in my monthly income statements.
In August I brought in $6,900. In September I made $7,300. In October I made $14,800. In November I broke through $16,000! I doubled my income in two months! Now I work less, enjoy what I do more, and had a couple of months where I earned over double what I was paid at my old day job.
It turns out that economist Vilfredo Pareto knew what he was talking about. 80/20 completely revolutionized how I look at my business. I’m earning more and I’m happier than ever. Since adopting 80/20, I have not had a month below $10,000 in income.

Applying 80/20 to Your Business

Can your business benefit from 80/20? Odds are that it absolutely will. You may not see such dramatic results, but you can always improve by looking at what’s working and what isn’t working in your business. If something works well, repeat. If something doesn’t, stop doing it. In life and business, that is the best strategy to follow.

How To Think About Your Freelance Income

oo many freelancers don’t know how much money they make or only have a vague idea. Here’s how to know your freelance income.
Doing freelance taxes is not as simple as doing taxes when you only have one W-2 job. You must ask yourself: How can you organize your papers so you don’t leave any income out when you do your taxes? The most systematic way is to take a copy of last year’s taxes or the organizer your tax preparer sends you and match item by item. Then if you discover you have not received a 1099 from a bank or other income source for last year, you will be reminded that you should call to ask about it, if it has not come by the end of January.
Just because you have not gotten a 1099 for something does not mean that the IRS did not. You are supposed to declare all the money you received, whether or not you received a 1099 for it. (The person who contracted you for the freelance job does not have to send you a 1099 if the amount was under $600.) People file their 1099’s late; you may not receive a 1099 by the time you file your taxes. That doesn’t mean that the IRS won’t receive the 1099 sooner or later and match it to you.
Keep track of every payment every person sent you during the year. Then match those amounts to the 1099’s you received to make sure the amounts are the same. If not, call the people who issued the 1099 in question and discuss the discrepancy; 1099’s can be changed. If you have a record of payments, figuring out your income for tax purposes becomes comparatively easy.
The IRS is getting very good at matching W-2’s and 1099’s to income tax forms. Freelancers, however, sometimes mix W-2 items with freelance income on Schedule C or sole proprietorship form. Then when the IRS sends a correction saying you left out the W-2 income, you have to study the forms to figure out if the IRS is right. Remember: Wages that have taxes taken out must go on the wage line and have a corresponding W-2.
During the year it’s good to put every tax document, be it a 1099 or W-2, into one tax file as well as plan ahead by filing every stub or record of money received. That way, the odd payment won’t elude you.
Don’t overlook unusual events that have tax consequences like:
  • Unemployment payments
  • Pension distributions
  • State tax refunds
  • Marriages or divorces
  • Disability or sickness benefits
  • Property or stock sales
  • Starting a business
  • Moving your business and/or your residence

How to Better Manage Your Freelance Income

Freelancing is rewarding, but it is not for the faint of heart. Yes, you get to do work you love and you get to do it on (mostly) your own terms. You also have play roles you may not enjoy so much, like marketer, sales person, and bookkeeper, some of which we've talked about before. And one of the biggest challenges in freelancing is managing an irregular income.

Before I started working for Lifehacker, I spent over twenty years as a freelance computer consultant and writer. I loved working for myself, almost as much as I love with the people here, but managing the boom and bust cycle of work was something that never came easy. I did learn some good lessons along the way, though.

Create an Emergency Fund

Everybody should have an emergency fund that they only dip into when they need to cover basic expenses and have no other recourse. You've heard this advice from us on more than one occasion. The common wisdom is to keep enough money in your emergency fund to cover six to eight months of bills. If you're freelancing, you need more.

I recommend at least being able to cover expenses for a full year. Remember that it isn't just personal expenses you have to think about anymore. You also need to be able to cover business-related expenses and there are some other advantages, too:
  • You'll find you aren't quite as desperate for clients. If a job comes along that, for whatever reason, you don't feel right about taking, you'll feel more comfortable saying no or at least taking the time to figure out how much you really need the job.
  • If clients can't (or won't) pay their bills on time, you have more flexibility in dealing with them. If a good client is going through a rough patch and needs a little more time to pay, it's a lot easier to work something out with them if you have fallback funds.
  • You can take advantage of more opportunities. If an event arises that lets you do some real networking or extend your training, you can think about whether it's worth putting off clients for that time so you can take advantage of it. A good emergency fund can make that decision easier, though you have to be careful not to make dipping into your fund like that a habit.

Open a Separate Business Account (and Use It)

If you're freelancing and you're a sole proprietor, it's perfectly legal to use the same account for personal and business expenses. It is not, however, a very good idea. Keeping a separate business account, even if you're just freelancing occasionally on the side, makes it much easier for you to create a viable budget. It also makes tax season a good bit less frustrating for you and your accountant.
Use that business account for business expenses, your salary, and paying into your retirement, tax, and business emergency fund. And that's it. If you have money left over, pat yourself on the back and leave it there. You never know what next month is going to be like.

Build Other Funds if You Need Them

As a freelancer, you don't get perks like insurance, 401K matching, or even automatic withholding for taxes. You have to take care of it all yourself. You can absolutely get by just using your regular business savings account and keeping track of how much you're saving away for different purposes. That's what spreadsheets and accounting programs are for, right?

4 WAYS TO STABILIZE FREELANCE INCOME IN YOUR BUSINESS

Perhaps the most difficult part of running a freelance business (at least in my opinion) is learning how to stabilize freelance income. Or, at the very least, learn to deal with the swings that occur in your business without ripping your hair out.
This is especially true in the first couple of years of starting your business, but speaking as someone who is passed that mark, it can still be difficult even when you’re starting to make good money.
Here are some tips on how to stabilize freelance income so you can at least have some peace of mind. Note: Some of these are lessons I’ve learned the hard way.

Have patience.

The first step in learning how to stabilize freelance income is to have patience. A lot of it. It takes time for your business to get off the ground. In my case, I didn’t feel like I’d reached a tipping point in my business (and therefore my freelance income) until I’d been running my business full-time for two years.
I once had a business mentor continuously tell me, “Just make it past three years.” This became my mantra as I dealt with inconsistent income in the beginning. If it’s helpful, find something that will remind you to be patient during this time.

Find different sources of revenue.

I’m beating a dead horse again, but it’s with good reason. By far, the number one tip that has allowed me to better stabilize freelance income is to incorporate different sources of revenue into my business.
I recently wrote about how I wasn’t worried about a natural disaster hitting my area and losing power because I knew I was making money from affiliate income. Additionally, I also made money from selling products on my blog’s store this past month.
This means I have some sort of money coming in from other sources besides client work. Because of this, I don’t have to worry as much about a project not going through or a deal not getting signed.

Know your numbers.

Knowledge is power, especially as you are learning how to stabilize freelance income. That’s why it’s imperative that you start becoming hyper aware of your expenses and your revenue. After all, if you’re oblivious to what’s going on with the numbers, then you can’t take action to stabilize your income.
In my case, since numbers have never been my strong suit, I had to hire an accountant to help me out. I also use online software to help me track and balance my budget. I admit this has not always been easy, but I usually feel better once I can actually see what’s going on.

Start focusing on what works.

The great thing about tracking numbers is that you can see what works and what doesn’t. For example, it was when I realized I was making more money writing about finance that I decided to finally specialize in it. Additionally, I know which of my affiliate products is most popular, so that’s the one I focus on promoting the most.
By knowing what works, I can start customizing my business to focusing on what makes money. This allows me to stabilize freelance income because I have data to show me what gets me paid the most. I then use that data to take action.

Final Thoughts

Learning how to stabilize freelance income takes time, but it is well worth the effort once you get the hang of it. By using these tips, you’ll be well on your way to finally having some peace of mind as it pertains to your freelance income.

HOW TO GET WORK DONE AT HOME WHEN YOU’VE GOT KIDS

While it may not be ideal to be on the phone with a client or working on preparing invoices while you’re at home with your children, sometimes it’s the only way to get things done. If you find yourself snapping at your kids or neglecting your work, try these simple tips for getting work done at home while keeping your children entertained (and you won’t even have to resort to using a screen – though we’ve all done it from time to time).

Work Early, Late, and In Between

You already knew it wasn’t going to be a 9-5 gig. When you have children, it may be anything but. For many parents who work at home, the early hours before the children wake, naptime, and bedtime can be the very best times to be uninterrupted. If you can’t concentrate when you know your children need you, don’t be torn between snapping at them and feeling guilty for not getting anything done. Instead, simply do as much work as you can when they’re sleeping. Fortunately, the younger they are, the more sleep they need, so if you can readjust your schedule to match their snoring you’ll both be happier.

Let Them Work Too

You know what kids need? A job. I don’t mean flipping hamburgers or mowing lawns (unless they’re old enough, in which case, yes, I absolutely mean that). But kids are happiest when they’ve got something productive to do. If you’re sitting down to work, it’s an ideal time for older kids to be sitting down beside you and doing their homework. You can take a break to stretch and have a snack together (and use that break to help them if they’ve got questions – knowing when a break is coming will make it easier for them not to interrupt you). Are they too young to have homework? Even toddlers enjoy having their own paper and pencil to write “letters,” and older kids really can write to a penpal, friends, or relatives. You can even dust off a calculator and find a toy (or broken) cell phone so they can pretend to work just like you do. Remember, you’re setting a good example for them when you show them what diligent work looks like – great motivation to stay off social media when you’re supposed to be getting stuff DONE.

Set a Time Limit – and Stick to It

You don’t want to have your kid have the following words carved into your gravestone someday: “She said just one more email.” While the tasks you need to complete seem never-ending, the whole work/life balance thing can only be a reality when you give yourself a limited time in which to accomplish a project. Tell your child you’re going to work for 45 minutes and then read them a book; then set a timer, and when it goes off, it’s pencil down, laptop closed for you. You’ll be re-energized by the break, and connecting with your children really can be just as (if not more) fulfilling than chatting with a coworker.

HOW TO GET OVER THE FEAR OF REJECTION IN BUSINESS

I recently starting coaching one of my mentors around her abundance mindset. She has a fear of rejection when it comes to asking for money and we’re working together to help her get over it.

(Ironically, I don’t really care about getting rejected in business and I never really have, but she has to help me deal with rejection in my personal life. I consider this an example of what happens when people who need each other work together.)
The fear of rejection in business is major for people. It’s one of the reasons so many great ideas go unfinished or unseen. Unfortunately, it’s the name of the game if you want to run a business. The truth is you’ll likely go through a lot of rejection before you start seeing some success.
Seeing as how that’s the case, here are some of the tips I’ve shared with my client on how to get over the fear of rejection in business.

Realize it’s not personal.

There is absolutely nothing personal about asking for money and not getting it. It’s just a piece of paper (or numbers on a computer screen).
The truth is we’re the ones who inject emotion and meaning into money. If someone rejects our offer we’re the ones going into a tailspin over how it’s a rejection of us as a person when nothing could be further from the truth.
So the next time you start questioning your self-worth because someone rejected your quote, just remember that a piece of paper can never really be equal to your worth as a human.

You’ll eventually reach a tipping point.

Once you’ve had enough doors slammed in your face, you eventually reach a tipping point.
This is the moment when some of those previous no’s turn into yeses.
It’s the moment when you quote bigger numbers and you actually get it.
It’s the moment where you’ve been in the game long enough to have built some clout.
The thing you have to remember is you have to go through the tough spots first. You don’t get to the good parts without experiencing some rejection first.

You’re building thicker skin.

There’s always a lesson to be had and learning how to handle rejection is no example.
Twitter trolls and nasty Instagram comments don’t really get under your skin once you’ve been rejected in your business enough times. You literally just don’t care because you have more important things to worry about.
If there’s one thing that rejection in business as taught me it’s to discern when something is a big deal versus when it’s not. For example, a Twitter troll is not a big deal. Not even someone ripping me to shreds on their Facebook business page is a big deal.
What is a big deal is making sure I’m moving my business forward by any means necessary, so I don’t really have time to get in my feelings.
I’ve also learned how to be a better closer thanks to all the rejection I went through in the beginning of my business.

Have compassion.

One thing that helped me get over my own fear of rejection was to learn how to have compassion for potential clients.
Making financial decisions is not easy. I know that because I have to make them all the time. With that being said, if it’s not easy for me then it’s certainly not easy for someone on the other end of my proposal.
By remembering that, I’m actually able to create the space where they feel more comfortable talking money. And lo behold, being able to do that more often than not leads to getting paid in the end.
